‘Canal Quarter’ planned for Stratford-upon-Avon

STRATFORD-UPONAVON CANAL

Canal Boat - - News -

IN CONTRAST TO the Stratford Canal’s glorious arrival at Bancroft Basin in the shadow of the Shakespeare Memorial Threatre, its approach to the town runs through the back of an industrial area. But that looks set to change as a result of plans to create a ‘canal quarter’.

The site extends for over half a mile from Lock 52 towards the edge of the town. Earmarked for what the Council calls “an attractive urban neighbourhood for Stratford-upon-Avon capitalising on its proximity to the town centre”, the site would see 650 homes, business uses, and a waterside ‘linear park’.

A design study has now been accepted by Stratford District Council, and will form the basis for planning policy covering future development on the site.
