It seems that a week doesn’t pass without a story about somebody somewhere embarking on a gruelling towpath-walking marathon, hiking the Leeds & Liverpool or Grand Union to raise sponsorship for a good cause – and all over the country, people are keeping fit by putting in the miles, walking or jogging on towpaths. Spare a thought, then, for the poor folks of Swansea where the council has produced a series of downloadable walking guides to get more people into the Great Outdoors and classified a one-mile stroll along the Swansea Canal towpath through Clydach in the ‘challenging’ category of its grading system. A reader of the local paper asked, “Who would this walk be challenging for?” The council replied that the walks had been graded by people who had walked them, and that “a walk that some people may find easy will be challenging for others”. Meanwhile, our Deputy Editor happens to be heading for a canal restoration volunteer camp at Clydach this summer: he will keep a look out for any exhausted walkers struggling past on aching limbs...
