Don’t break the chain

Canal Boat - - Letters -

In the July issue of Canal Boat, there is a Boat Test of the unnamed new boat from Blisworth Tunnel Boats.

Looking carefully at the accompanying photographs and the magazine front cover, I can clearly see a third chain hanging down below the stern fender. This appears to be attached to the rudder and I should be grateful if you could let me know its purpose.

I ask because I have recently bought a new stern fender, with a similar chain and I was about to cut it off!

DAVID SIMMONS via email

Ed says: We checked with Blisworth Tunnel and Jason tells us it’s a chain that holds the fender in position and usually goes down to a cleat on the hull, so don’t cut it off...
