Lynn and Steve Brown met when they were both serving in the Navy. Lynn was in the Wrens and became a social worker, which took her from Plymouth and Portsmouth to Gibraltar and Honk Kong. Steve was in the engineering department looking after warships at sea and then working on fuel systems.
They started boating because the Navy has a couple of narrowboats based at Calcutt. It means they’ve a boating history stretching back some 20 years.
They started planning their new boat five years ago and a lot of time has been invested in researching what systems to put on board. The boat’s name comes from an incident which happened when Steve was a boy. His grandfather sent him on an errand to the shops, and said he could also buy some sweets for himself with some of the change. But Steve misheard; he bought threpence ha’penny worth of sweets, when his grandfather had actually said three ha’pennies – so he had to give most of the sweets back...
