Canal Boat - - This Month - NICK WALL Editor

Roll on the lazy, hazy days of summer with great days out and plenty of time on the water for those going on holiday

When I were a lad I lived for the long, sunny summer days

early on we’d play around Branston Lock on the Trent & Mersey as soon as the teachers flew south for the summer and our days were carefree.

Some years later summer play consisted of boating holidays and, yes, the sun always shone and the skies were always blue... They were times and memories that have a special place, which might have something to do with me occupying this chair.

And that’s one of the reasons I like August now. There might (I said might...) be a warm, lazy August on the way this year and I rather hope so just think of all those families heading off to the waterways for their holidays, incubating in the summer heat the next generations of boaters. We hope the sun really does shine for them.

I don’t know about you, but I’m in two minds about HS2 – I mean, I’ve always hankered after a trip on the ‘Bullet Train’ but never quite made it to Japan, so the prospect of us having our version which will be slower and probably less efficient (hey, you can’t have everything) is quite appealing. On the other hand, I don’t want it in my 3mph backyard – or yours.
