Well-known boater dies in narrowboat fire
Well-known member of the boating community Alexandra (Alex) Bennett has tragically lost her life as a result of a fire on the narrowboat which was her home.
The fire brigade were called out to the blaze in the early hours of 22 February, and using breathing apparatus they succeeded in rescuing 57-year-old Alex and extinguishing the flames. They carried out CPR on her, but she died on the scene.
A subsequent investigation by police and fire services identified the cause as a solid fuel stove door left open, allowing burning fuel to fall onto the carpet.
Alex was also the owner of the working boat Tench, which achieved prominence recently when she welcomed The Alarum Theatre on board to use the boat for their tour of the waterways performing their show Idle Women of the Wartime Waterways, following the route taken by the wartime trainee boatwomen 75 years earlier.
