Intermittent stalling

-

My 2011 Jaguar XF 2.2 190bhp with 85,000 miles and a full service history is stalling intermittently. The car starts, idles and drives fine, but when I come to pull away, the engine hunts, then stalls. It starts again OK, but the engine stop/ start fault light is illuminated – it’s possible there’s a fault in the stop/start circuitry that is causing the stalling. The engine warning light doesn’t come on and there are no stored fault codes.

The car has stalled about 3-4 times a week for the last month, which gets stressful in traffic as I don’t know whether it’ll happen at the next lights. I have tried changing the fuel filter, but it didn’t help. It’s not a common fault according to the XF forum. Dave Have a look for air leaks to the inlet system, manifold, pipes, etc. Use a length of hose with one end stuck in your ear, while the other is used to sniff around suspect areas. Inspect and bend all rubber pipes for structural integrity. Tried this with no luck. However, an online forum suggested the EGR may be to blame. I have tried Wynn’s EGR cleaner as a belt-and-braces approach, and there has been no reoccurrence of the problem. All of this could be linked to my motoring habits changing, making only local runs for the last three months and with limited motorway mileage. Dave
