Oil change

-

I am about to change the oil on my 2001 Renault Megane 1.6 16v (K4M), but I am confused regarding the correct grade to use. The Haynes manual recommends 15W40 to 15W50 for a petrol engine. However, motor factors online offer 5W30 fully-synthetic, so it would appear that the experts have changed their opinion over the years.

Bearing in mind that the engine has 63,000 miles on the clock, perhaps 15W40 would be the best to take up the wear but could prove a problem in the cold weather. WHA Burgess As oil technology has changed, so have the recommendations for different vehicles. According to my data, the recommended grade is a 5W40 fully-synthetic oil which reaches the standard of ACEA A3/B4; API SM CF. For a modern unit, 63,000 miles is not an excessive amount and I wouldn’t worry at this stage about having to take up wear in the components.
