DIY Servicing: Volvo S70 2.4 petrol
The last of the squarecut Volvos offer a lot of car for your money, but don’t punish you by being that difficult to service. Richard Gunn shows us what’s involved.
It takes a lot to kill an old Volvo. That’s why we’ve returned to one of the marque’s elder models for this issue. Although it’s been 21 years since the Volvo S70 was launched, there are many survivors still going strong.
In reality, the S70 isn’t much more than a mildly updated 850 saloon, with more rounded lines and a new name. So most of what is found here will also apply to the 850, as well as the firstgeneration V70s and C70s.
We’re looking at the front-wheel drive variant here, not the all-wheel drive version. Because it’s based on older technology, from the days before Ford took over Volvo and started injecting Blue Oval components, there’s little complexity to these cars. They’re spacious, so there’s plenty of room to work, and everything is sensibly laid out. Only the rear disc brakes, which use a rather antiquated system of pins and clips to hold the pads, offer any real challenge to anyone with a basic mechanical knowledge.
Our example is a 2.4-litre version, with 110,000 miles on the clock, which still feels like a healthy and strong example of its type – and currently for sale, for £750 if you’re interested. If you do, at least you won’t have to service it for a while and, when that time comes, you’ve already got the perfect guide here in your hands.
