Belt or chain?

Car Mechanics (UK) - - Help! -

I am thinking of buying a 2005-2008 Ford Mondeo, Focus or Focus C-MAX and going for a 1.8- or 2.0-litre petrol engine. Am I right in thinking these engines have timing chains? Richard Chappell From the information I have, the C-MAX petrol models for that date range are fitted with either the 1.4, 1.6 or 1.6 TI-VCT, all of which have a timing belt. The Focus C-MAX 1.8 using a Duratec engine utilises a timing chain built between 2003-2009, so will encompass your date range. The Focus S-MAX 2.0-litre petrol engine is a Duratec unit and this also has a timing chain. The Mondeo 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 engines of that age are Duratec units and also have a chain-driven camshaft, although I believe the petrol engine was only available up to 2007.

There are a great variation of engines used through the range, so if you specifically wish to obtain a vehicle that uses a timing chain, this should be checked before purchase.

The Ford Duratec engine has chain-driven camshafts.
