Oil specification

-

I maintain all of the cars in my family and many of them are made by Vauxhall and Ford. The Ford cars require 5W-30 engine oil to specification WSS-M2C913-A, while the Vauxhalls use 5W-30 engine oil to Dexos 2 specification. I am looking to buy the engine oil in bulk, so is it acceptable to use Dexos 2 engine oil in both makes? Bruce Selby

I would need the exact details of each vehicle to be certain, but the Ford-specified 5W-30 oil is possibly ACEA A5/B5, while the Vauxhall oil may be ACEA C3. Even though both are 5W-30, this only refers to the viscosity of the oil, not its performance qualities. Despite the difference in price, it would be far better to buy the correct oil for each vehicle than to compromise on a one-size-fits-all alternative.

This is a problem we come across in the workshop. Whereas years ago a bulk delivery of 20W-50 would satisfy most vehicles, we now carry around six drums of different oils to varying specifications.
