Engines

The VVT-I petrol units are virtually bulletproof and, being chain-driven, there’s no cambelt interval to worry about. That said, the engines are worked hard so it makes sense to replace the oil

and filter on an annual basis or at least every 10,000 miles. And being a VVT-I, it’s worth keeping an eye on levels. The only other real issue concerns water pumps on early models, which have been known to fail, so keep a lookout for tell-tale coolant leaks.

Clutches fail prematurely on early cars, sometimes after as little as 35,000 miles, so if it feel heavy or emits clunks, it could be about to let go. Cars made after 2009 had the more robust Yaris clutch fitted and it’s possible to upgrade an original to the 190mm diameter item.
