Ring’s trendy-looking inspection lamp caught the eye of all our mechanics. Performance-wise, it produces 230-430 lumens of light for 3-6 hours from an in-built 7.4-volt 1.3Ah lithium-ion battery that takes around four hours to recharge. The illumination is bright thanks to a 5W COB LED, the body feels solid because it’s constructed from aluminium and there’s a magnetic adjustable base to help with positioning the lamp and keeping it secure.

Unfortunately, while this lamp looks great and produces bright illumination, it’s not that useful when trying to work in an engine bay, underneath a car or in a wheelarch. The weight of the lamp means the magnetic base often isn’t capable of securing it to a metal surface. It can be stood upright in an engine bay, but there’s no means of angling the light to help illuminate an object.

We did find it more useful when draining engine oil, securing it upside down to a chassis leg, plus it’s easy to wipe clean and the rubber-coated on/off button is easy to find on the back.
