Annoying brake noise

Car Mechanics (UK) - - Tales From The Workshop -

▶ A noise from the offside front brake of this 2012 Nissan Micra started without warning. The sound did not alter with braking, so the owner ruled out the possibility of a dangerously low brake pad. Removing the front wheels, we found the culprit pretty quickly.

If the owner had reversed, he may well have cleared up the problem himself. A large stone had become wedged between the brake pad carrier and brake disc, causing it to continually rub against the disc. Because it was rubbing against the flange of the disc and not the braking surface, no damage had been done and the brake discs were still perfectly serviceable.

The stone was popped out and, after refitting the wheel, a quick roadtest confirmed that all was now quiet.

A stone was wedged in the brake pad carrier, rubbing against the disc.
