Key battery drain

Car Mechanics (UK) - - Help! -

I have a 2010 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 with the Z16 XER engine. The key-fob goes flat within days of fitting a new battery – I am using quality and in-date Duracell batteries. The fob works OK and none of the buttons seems to be sticking, but after about a week the battery is flat. Can you recommend a company who can reprogramme it? Also, will this be possible without the vehicle being present? I live in rural Cumbria and I am trying to avoid using the main Vauxhall dealer. Christefer Crocus

It does sound as though the remote fob is at fault and draining the battery. I would first examine the small metal fingers which press against the battery to ensure that none of these are bent slightly out of shape, allowing the battery to short out. If this doesn’t help, you probably need to either have the key repaired or replaced.

There’s an online service offering key repairs at this website: https://
