Manifold change

Car Mechanics (UK) - - Help! -

I am about to replace the exhaust manifold gasket on my 2000 Saab 9-5 2.3T as a couple of studs are broken and need to be renewed. I’ve got a new gasket, but which way does the gasket fit? One side has a shiny metal face and the other is typical dark gasket material, so which side faces the block? Also, should I fit the gasket dry or cover it with a light smear of Aluminium LS159 grease, which I believe aids future removal? Derek Houghton The shiny metal or silver side faces towards the cylinderhead. Saab literature states that the gasket and studs should be smeared with a light coat of Molycote 1000 (part number 30 20 971) or similar; the Aluminium LS159 will serve the same purpose. When refitting the manifold to the cylinderhead, the fixings should be torqued to 25Nm.
