Number 37 in our countdown but without doubt the best-looking Porsche race car ever. Martini colours? More vents than bodywork? Turbo pipework like a sewer main? Delicious. Imagine a delicate Carrera 2.7 RS captured by a seaside caricature-cartoonist and you’ve got a decent approximation of the wild Carrera RSR Turbo. Humongous lared arches and a giant rear wing helped deliver its 500bhp to the ground through wheels like oil drums that measured a staggering 17 inches across. Meanwhile ibreglass panels and an interior strip more ruthless than an acid bath pegged the kerbweight to just over 800kg. That was still more than the featherweight prototypes on track at Le Mans in 1974, but Porsche very nearly beat them anyway, a damaged gearbox meaning they eventually had to settle for second behind Matra.
HEAVIER THAN THE LE MANS PROTOTYPES BUT IT VERY NEARLY BEAT THEM ANYWAY
