Alpine or Porsche?

CAR (UK) - - Car Interactive -

Really loved CAR June, almost too much! Why? Because I am a long-standing Porsche fan so featuring the 70-year landmark was right up my street. But also because I have a real soft spot for Alpine Renaults. I remember them back in the day for their motorsport antics, particularly in the WRC. They looked and sounded fantastic and were incredibly successful.

When I saw the Alpine Vision concept car at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2016, next to a selection of successful Alpine racers, I was truly excited at the prospect of a new road car, but doubted that Renault would do it.

Then last year. also at Goodwood, there it was, in the iconic metallic blue, looking stunning in the sunshine, sleek and purposeful, just like its ’70s predecessor, and available at a relatively affordable price. Well done Renault I say! I was invited to put down a deposit on one there and then, and was sorely tempted.

So here is my dilemma. My current everyday driver is a 997 Carrera S: love it, but it’s getting on a bit, so it’s time to change it. The cost to upgrade to a newer 911 is a challenge: not sure about the 718 Cayman, and now there is an actual Alpine in the mix. Your comparison with the Fiesta ST only served to pique my interest further. What to do?

The Fiesta doesn’t sound too shabby either!
