1974 Spoils of war

In 1973 OPEC, the Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries, stops selling oil to countries that it believes backed Israel in the Arab-Israeli war. The price of oil soars. In response, a national speed limit of 55mph is imposed in the USA in 1974. Cruise control finds new favour as a tool to unlock more economical (and legal) driving.
