Uncanny castle
Castle of Good Hope is a 17thCentury fortress and one of Cape Town’s oldest buildings. People have heard voices and footsteps in the dungeon, with sounds echoing through the halls, even when no-one’s there. The Bell Tower was bricked up after a soldier hung himself from the rope, and you can often hear the bell ring from behind the wall… The grounds are haunted by Lady Anne Barnard who lived spirit there in the 18th Century. Since her death, her has appeared at parties and at the Dolphin Pool, now a fountain, where she used to wash. The Castle has a history of inhumane treatment, darkness, torture and death. Prisoners would be kept in The empty then forced to look at the sun, blinding them. dungeon is now haunted by phantoms whose disembodied screams have been heard by visitors. Van The Castle’s former Governor, Pieter Gysbert Noodt, once condemned seven soldiers to death, so they put a curse on him. Later the same day, Van Noodt died of a heart attack. His spirit still roams the passageways and his phantom dog approaches visitors.
