The 16th-19th cen­turies saw a spate of witch­hunts in Europe. Ire­land didn't es­cape.

In 1661, it was claimed that, on be­ing re­fused a piece of beef at John Pyne's house, Florence New­ton of Youghal kissed his maid, caus­ing the woman to suf­fer from fits. It was also al­leged that she brought about Pyne's death by kiss­ing him, too.
