Practice deep listening
Listening deeply is a difficult skill but it’s worth developing because it increases your empathic skills. These will make you feel more connected to others, which in turn helps create stable, healthier and more enjoyable relationships.
Really listen. Avoid interrupting by saying, ‘I know how you feel,’ or by topping the story with something worse that happened to you.
If you’re not sure how to respond, admit it. ‘I don’t know what to say, but I’m here to listen,’ is a mindful reaction.
If you feel frustration or impatience surfacing, acknowledge these feelings mentally then re-engage. Listening means giving another person your attention and being ‘present’.
