Obeah hasn’t al­ways been used as a force for bad. In the early 18th cen­tury, slave Queen Nanny led a re­bel­lion across Ja­maica. A skilled obeah­woman, leg­end has it she caught the en­emy’s bul­lets with her bare hands. A na­tional hero, she still ap­pears on a Ja­maican ban­knote (left).
