The Big Picture
A teen bedroom in Cuddington
1 I wanted the girls to be involved with the design process, says Jennie Daly, so they would sit in on the meetings with Claire - of Claire Davies Interiors who I asked to help us create a home we all loved to live in - and discuss their individual styles. We decided on an ‘industrial/urban chic’ theme for this room. Claire suggested that we instal bespoke shelving and a desk made from reclaimed scaffolding. We also commissioned a timber frame to be made for around the far end of the room. The timber effect wallpaper is really unusual and so effective – it’s quite fantastic!
2 I wanted a room that worked for my daughter at all times of day or evening and for whatever purpose she needed, so lighting was absolutely key. The ceiling light, which hangs just above the foot of the bed, is not only functional, but beautiful and the ambient gold studiostyle lamps and fairy lights weaved in and out of shelves means there’s lots of different options for changing the lighting for relaxing, studying or reading.
3 My daughter is very creative and enjoys learning to play her favourite songs on the guitar. The newly-designed room is a calming and inspiring space where she can practice between lessons.
4 We all read a lot in this house. The bespoke shelving in this room has created plenty of storage space for her. She has books going back to some of the first that she read when she was small and now has space to keep them safe and still accessible.
5 My daughter has taken some beautiful pictures of the family and our holidays together and wanted to be able to showcase them in her own room. We’ll be putting them up in our newly renovated open plan family room too.
6 A place to study was really important to us. My daughter will be using her room for study for a long time, so it needed to be somewhere comfortable and quiet with plenty of space. Claire designed a corner desk with a storage aperture and matching filing cabinet. It’s a great place for her to collect her thoughts and work in a calm environment.
7 Scouts. The girls are involved in a lot of activities and Scouts is an important part of my daughter’s life. When we talked to Claire before she developed her designs this love of the outdoors and her adventurous side was discussed and it’s really been expressed in the room, which is wonderful.
