Did New Year pass you by? Take two, by getting into the mood for Chinese New Year (which this year falls on 16 February) and take inspiration from Chinese porcelain. Ostindia – which has been voted “Service of the Century” – is a Swedish classic made by Rörstrand
(the second oldest porcelain manufacturer in Europe after Meissen) that owes its existence to an original Chinese designed porcelain that was found in a Swedish ship that sank in somewhat mysterious circumstances in 1745 just outside the port of Gothenburg after having successfully sailed all the way from China (a round trip took between 1.5 and 2 years!) A fragment of the porcelain got to the Rörstrand factory and inspired the collection that began in the 1930s. In 2012, Finnish designer Caroline Slotte was asked to update Ostindia, and the Ostindia Floris service was begun – you can tell which is which because the Floris design has much denser foliage. An elegant way to start the Year of the Dog!
