A retreat for all seasons
The retreat at San Luis is a collection of private chalets and treehouses set in the Avelengo Plateau, 1,400 meters above the spa resort of Merano in the South Tyrol region of Italy. If you are after regeneration, peace and relaxation at any time of the year then you are heading for the right place. The chalets were constructed with wood from the forest and feature black slate, raw linen, glass walls, high beamed ceilings, open fires and handmade furniture. The chalets are perched around the lake and the treehouses are deep in the pine forest, where you are in an ideal place to experience some forest bathing (which we talk about in another article in this Issue). The chalets have fireplaces and private saunas and the sumptuous clubhouse acts as a centre of activity for the resort. The clubhouse has different areas with restaurants, a bar, a cinema (with freshly made popcorn), a wine and cheese cellar and a wonderful pool area with jacuzzi and beauty rooms (there is also a heated outdoor pool). If you opt for the treehouses, then you have a choice of single or two storey suites which are presented to the same level of detail as the chalets and are beautifully designed and furnished with exquisite bathrooms, some with their own terraces. There is something magical about waking up literally in the trees! When you come down to earth, you are treated to Michelin-starred cooking and can experience a cuisine that exhibits the Tyrol/Mediterranean mix although it is perfectly possible to have your breakfast served in your treehouse. The neighbouring region enjoys almost 200 sunkissed days each year. Its location and climate make it an ideal spot for excursions into the countryside and there are many sports activities in all seasons. There is something awe-inspiring in seeing the ski season move gracefully into the biking and hiking season and to be able to enjoy the natural environment all year round.
