1957 Harley launches the 883cc OHV, four-cam V-twin XL Sportster
1967 XLH gets electric start with new crankcases and a different frame. Kick-only XLCH continues
1969 AMF buys H-D. Sportster sales continued to grow
1970 The dirt tracker racing XR750 – basically a destroked Sportster motor – is launched
1973 XLH and XLCH get disc front brakes and Kayaba forks
1977 XLCR Café Racer is unveiled at Daytona
1986 The first year of the Evolution V-twin engine Sportsters, with models: XLH 883, XLH 883 Deluxe, XLH 1100 and XLH 1100 Liberty
1991 The first year of the fivespeed Sportster
1993 All Sportster models now fitted with belt drive
2004 First year of the rubber-mounted engine, which was fitted in a redesigned frame that was used across the Sportster range of four models
2007 50th year of the Sportster. First year of fuel-injected Sportsters
2008 Launch of the XR1200 in Europe. It’s actually launched in the US a year later!
2016 Launch of the sports-orientated Sportster model, the 1200cc Roadster
