Budding motor sport engineers now have the chance to gain a qualification via online courses.

The Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering, run by the National Motorsport Academy, takes in mathematics, race car design and preparation, research and development analysis, fluid dynamics, data acquisition and more. Work experience and research study is a key part of the course. A final-year top up course to gain the full Motorsport Engineering degree includes advanced engine development and aerodynamics. It’s estimated that the course can be completed in 36 months.

While the course is widely applicable to motorsport of all kinds, much of the learning can be applied to historic racing too. The National Motorsport Academy is part of the NDA Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation committed to enabling wider access to higher education through online learning, and runs in partnership with Staffordshire University.
