Manumatic memories

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Your Letters -

I very much enjoyed the feature Top 10 1950s icons ( CCW, 20 January), and my memory was triggered by the term ‘Manumatic’ in the ‘Fascinating Fact’ attached to the Wolseley 15/50.

I never saw a Manumatic Wolseley, but I clearly remember, as a car-mad youngster of nine or 10 years of age, seeing a Manumatic version of the Hillman Minx. What caught my attention was that although it was quite common to see one with a column gearchange option, this particular car had the gear lever positioned for right hand operation.

I’m pretty sure it had a ‘Manumatic’ badge on the bootlid. As with the Wolseley, I very much doubt that any Manumatic Minxes have survived, but does anyone else remember seeing one, especially with the gear lever on the ‘wrong side’? Stephen Moyce, Douglas, Isle of Man
