Blame my own bone idleness. I really ought to have taken the MX-5 out for the occasional blast over the winter, but it’s been so cold and unbearably wet I’ve left it tucked up in the carport.

It took three weeks before the weather fifinally started playing ball enough for me to venture out and fifish P448 NNM out of its hidey-hole. It might sound a like a cliché but the ultradependable MX-5 started straight away on the fifirst turn of the key with no issues. I know it’s not a huge surprise as it was built in Japan in the 1990s, but hearing the revvy four-pot burst into life was a relief nonetheless.

I jumped in the car and couldn’t get over how low it felt. Driving a hatchback – even one as fun and fifinely honed as a RenaultSport Clio – as a daily over winter made me forget what a proper, purpose built sports car feels like. It felt great – but the important thing was to make sure it was in rude health before taking it on any longer adventures. The oil was fifine, the brakes were working and none of the calipers – it’s a common sticking point on older MX-5s – had seized up, but the tyres had lost quite a lot of pressure. I like to run mine at 28PSI all round, but each tyre was signifificantly less than that. The rear driver’s side one was at 22PSI.

Now topped up, they’ve maintained their air since, but it’s just worth checking them, as there are notable performance gains to be made. It’s also been treated to a new set of windscreen wipers after a quick trip to Halfords.

Being reunited with it has been wonderful. Its fifirst outing involved one of my favourite roads – but it seems plenty of you had the same idea. I spotted a Triumph TR4, Jaguar E-type and a C3 Corvette Stingray also enjoying the sunshine!

I can’t wait to get it the MX-5 out on even more adventures once the evenings get longer.

New wipers for the MX-5. It doesn’t have a rear one – annoying in the rain, less so changing them.

MX-5 emerges from its winter hibernation like a caterpillar from its chrysalis to discover it has sprouted wings.

Murray gives his quadriceps femoris, iliopsoas, and sartorius a winter workout while the weather plays ball.
