Higher up, check the lower cor­ners of the front and rear screen frames, the rear edge of the roof and around the sun­roof if one is fit­ted.

White smoke means a worn turbo; lack of power is likely to be worn cam lobes. Hot oil pres­sure should be at least 1bar at idle.

Test for clutch slip; chang­ing it is a ma­jor job for which you should al­low at least £500, so hag­gle ac­cord­ingly.

Avoid cars with low­ered and up­rated sus­pen­sion – the ex­tra stresses cre­ated can cause crack­ing in the bodyshell.
