So, there you have it. The Government has spoken, and the rolling 40-year VED exemption for historic vehicles is here to stay. As our news story (p3) spells out, despite the existence of a petition which has attracted more than 18,000 signatures, it’s a very firm ‘no’.
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I fully appreciate the benefit that owners of 40-year plus vehicles get. But it seems a shame that those who choose to lavish the same care and attention on younger classics aren’t afforded the same benefit.
Perhaps, as has been mooted many times, including in our letters pages three weeks ago, we should just make it fair, and bung the tax directly onto pump fuel. Then it really would be a pay-as-you-go system. That has to be a leveller, surely?
