So, there you have it. The Govern­ment has spo­ken, and the rolling 40-year VED ex­emp­tion for his­toric ve­hi­cles is here to stay. As our news story (p3) spells out, de­spite the ex­is­tence of a pe­ti­tion which has at­tracted more than 18,000 sig­na­tures, it’s a very firm ‘no’.

I have mixed feel­ings about this. On one hand, I fully ap­pre­ci­ate the ben­e­fit that own­ers of 40-year plus ve­hi­cles get. But it seems a shame that those who choose to lav­ish the same care and at­ten­tion on younger clas­sics aren’t af­forded the same ben­e­fit.

Per­haps, as has been mooted many times, in­clud­ing in our let­ters pages three weeks ago, we should just make it fair, and bung the tax di­rectly onto pump fuel. Then it re­ally would be a pay-as-you-go sys­tem. That has to be a lev­eller, surely?
