Up close with McLaren’s icon
Design legend Gordon Murray, the man behind the McLaren F1, insisted on being on hand to open the show and draw crowds to his exhibition.
McLaren F1: The Inside Story was curated by Murray himself in order to fully reveal the true passion and vision behind the ground-breaking car. Five F1s were set up in the ExCeL centre, including two road cars, two GTRs and one GT ‘Longtail’. The vehicles helped chronicle the supercar’s initial development as the world’s fastest car and then its transformation into an endurance racer capable of winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995.
Gordon Murray says the driving force behind the exhibition was to give visitors a rare chance to see the 241mph supercar up close.
‘The McLaren hasn’t been covered in enough detail and this show gives us the opportunity to do it,’ he explains. ‘Some £9000 worth of 24-carat gold foil went into the engine bay and people were able to see that up close.’
