Every few years, the Ian Fleming Estate invites an author to pen a new James Bond novel. Anthony Horowitz’s Trigger Mortis centres around an unused Fleming

idea of a Russian plot to kill Stirling Moss during an F1 race, developed to a larger, more epic scale. Set in 1957, this is resolutely Fleming’s literary Bond rather than the cinematic version, and this spirit and style is captured well. The racing scenes, with a Maserati 250F at the Nurbürgring are, very compelling. Elsewhere, 007’s period-correct Bentley MkIV is in action and the villain is suitably chilling and grandly nefarious. By far the best of the recent Bond books.
