‘I’ve owned a number of NA models in the past, but I wanted to pick up another now as a project and had been looking out for a well-priced, fair condition early one. I found a 1991 1.6i a couple of months ago that met the criteria – the mileage was a reasonable 90,000, with the underside in good condition, but it was definitely in need of some TLC, which is what I wanted. Some bodywork needs attention, mainly around the rear of the sill on one side and on the rear wheelarches. It’s nothing major but they’re common grot spots on the MX-5 to look out for. Engine-wise,

things are pretty sound – it’s been well looked after, the history is good, and the cambelt had been done recently. I’ll give it a service and attend to a couple of oil seals and a minor leak from the front crankshaft seal. Once I’ve refurbished the brakes and replaced a worn clutch slave cylinder that should mainly be it for the mechanicals. Then it’s just a case of tidying the interior and perhaps replacing the hood and restoring a few original components. The great thing about the MX-5 is how easy it is to work on, and I can’t wait to get this one back on the road.’
