My MGB GT has modern gas rear shock absorbers rather than the ones it left Abingdon with. It’s a common conversion that doesn’t fundamentally change the car’s character – but does that mean it falls foul of what FIVA’s calling for? While the last thing I’d want is for classic cars to be barred from our city centres on environmental grounds, I get the feeling that the stipulations of this Euro-wide proposal are going to open a can of worms. Let’s face it, plenty of us use classics every day, and they’re hardly the ropey old cars FIVA rails against. In all likelihood it’d be introduced on a 30-year rolling basis – so it will cover all those MX-5s and MGFs eventually – but there’s a lot of detail in this proposal that’ll make it hard to win the grass roots classic fans over.
