METRO MAN WINS HEARTS
An Austin Metro restored by its owner as a tribute to his late wife has won a public vote to find the nation’s favourite restored classic.
James Cribb’s 1989 City model beat off some extraordinary competition from nine other cars to win the Heritage Classic Car Insurance-supported Practical Classics Restorer of the Year award, voted for by the show’s visitors. Norman Smyth’s Jaguar E-type was Sponsor’s Choice and runner-up, while Chris Depledge’s Sunbeam Stiletto took third place.
‘I had no idea it was going to win – I’d have been happy for it to come fifth or sixth, so I’m over the moon,’ says James. ‘My wife would have been so proud of it.’
PC’s editor Danny Hopkins says the cars represent Britain’s best restorations and reflect the owners’ perseverance in turning dreams into roadgoing reality.
‘All these cars, and the stories behind their restorations, have been so inspiring,’ Danny says.
