1971 Ford Cortina 1600 GXL
One of the sale’s stars, this early GXL (unusually with the 1.6rather than 2.0-litre engine) was sold new in Scotland and stayed with its owner until he died late last year. With just under 60,000 miles on the clock it had survived very well thanks to the owner’s dedicated maintenance programme and for any Ford lover looking to cause a stir at the local classic show, this was the car to have. The bodywork was very good, panel fit was great and the paint was deep and blemish-free. The engine bay was a delight, while the olive green interior was superb. Some punters might have sniffed at the £8000-10,000 estimate, but the auctioneer wasn’t far off.
