I read with much in­ter­est the letters about Manu­matic trans­mis­sion in the 9, 16 and 23 March is­sues. Af­ter my first car – a gor­geous Sun­beam MkIII – was stolen In 1969, I bought a Hill­man Minx Se­ries III for £50, only to find it was equipped with Manu­matic gears.

I soon got used to two-pedal driv­ing and it worked a treat: smooth and hard to fault. Like any self-re­spect­ing nerd, I still have The Mo­tor road test re­ports of sev­eral Manu­matic mod­els, with a full run­down of the driv­ing ex­pe­ri­ence. It was avail­able from new
