What a fabulous weekend for buying a classic! Bonhams Goodwood Members’ Meeting and CCA’s first sale of the year showed a healthy level of vibrancy across all prices and kicked any idea of a withering market into the long grass. Add in HVA’s mainly automobilia (but with a small selection of cars, too) sale a couple of days before and it’s hard not to find something interesting worth buying.
What Bonhams’ and CCA’s sales showed was punters shouldn’t be buying the make or model that’s flavour of the month, but instead buy with their heart. Buying solely with a commercial head is ridiculous. Owning a classic should be, in the real sense of the world, emotional and, consequently, enjoyable.
Fingers crossed that, as the year rolls on, people will be buying with their heart. If that happens, the market will become more interesting as punters seek out entirely different motors. I’ll definitely raise a glass to that!
