1955 MercedesBenz 300SL
It isn’t surprising this ‘Gullwing’ pulled in such strong bidding, being in justright condition – neither too scruffy or over-restored. This was not some sterile trophy piece, but was good to use and good enough to keep in its current condition. Offered from the estate of the late business tycoon and refrigeration pioneer Kingsley Curtis, who had bought it in 1967, its 1997-2000 restoration had lasted well. Paint, bodywork and interior really wanted for nothing, other than if it was entered for a concours. It was a good buy, especially when compared with the prices being paid for other, currently fashionable marques.
