Scrappage is back in the news this week. There’s nothing new to suggest another round of this scheme is coming (let’s wait for an economic downturn for that), but thanks to some year-old images of a load of ex-Scrappage classics that are circulating the Internet, the issue has raised its head again (see page 3). Clearly these cars are still at Thurleigh airfield, and it’s shocking to think that a haul of classics – including Volkswagen Beetles, Ford Capris and countless pre-1990 Jaguars – is lying there, dormant. If the internet talk that these cars are all intact is correct, then this seems like a shocking waste.
OK, the Government said cars surrendered under Scrappage were being taken off the road, but the reality is that they’d be much better off being used by car owners who’d look after them.
