SICILY, ITALY, 5-18 MAY
A tour operator is joining forces with an Italian classic car club to offer the trip of a lifetime to the home of the legendary Targa Florio endurance road race.
Country Lane Tours is behind the two-week adventure starting in Calais. It then moves to Genoa for the ferry to Sicily, where members of Automobile Club Palermo will help give an insight into the island’s motoring connections and mark the 110th anniversary of the first Targa Florio.
The Sicilian leg begins with four nights in Villa Igiea, a stunning hotel overlooking the bay of Palermo and originally owned by the Florio family – pioneering driver Vincenzo Florio created the race in 1906.
‘This allows plenty of time to relax as well as taking in the sights of the ancient city, and driving the 47-mile Targa Florio route circuit, last used for the event in 1973,’ says tour director Ian Glass. ‘Cars of all types and vintages are welcome and Country Lane Tours events always have a varied selection of marques and ages participating.’
Entries for Targa Sicilia range from a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I to a 1994 Rover 216i Cabriolet.
