KENNY COLEMAN

Kenny owns three Elans, but the one here is particularly interesting. ‘My latest purchase was a 1963 Series I, and it’s quite rare as the bodywork was made by SJ Bourne who was sub-contracted by Lotus for the first few hundred cars. I liked the fact that it was not only an early model but unusual, too. When I bought it about two years ago it was totally dismantled, and had been dry stored for the best part of 40 years. The condition of many components was amazingly good and I started on the restoration a year ago, doing almost all of the work myself. I’ve restored these cars before so I know the pitfalls, but I did get someone else to paint this one. The car is almost ready, apart from refitting the engine ancillaries and a few other minor bits. I’ll be keeping it for a while when it’s finished; I enjoy using my Elans properly and plan on taking it to some events up here in Scotland, like those commemorating Jim Clark, and the Bo’ness hill climb which is always a great weekend.’
