DONINGTON HISTORIC FESTIVAL
DONINGTON PARK CIRCUIT, 30 APRIL-2 MAY
Saloon car heroes sliding around on damp corners and the chance to see the Jaguar Classic Challenge’s first race of 2016 were among many key moments of Donington’s three-day historic racing festival.
While the blustery conditions throughout the Bank Holiday meant the club gathering on the Leicestershire circuit’s infield felt more muted than previous years – although the BMW Car Club’s centenary parade was one of the event’s lunchtime highlights – it also meant some tense action on track, particularly during the 1958-66 touring car races.
The tricky conditions meant the Ford Falcon Sprints and Ford Mustangs had to fight through the sweeping bends to keep up with the more nimble Alfa Romeo Sprint GTs and Lotus Cortinas, with David Tomlin’s Lotus Cortina ultimately taking the honours in Monday’s final race.
Other highlights included Julian Thomas’ E-type taking victory in the Jaguar Classic Challenge, while the winner of the pre-1961 sports car challenge was Chris Ward in his 1959 Lister Costin. David Simister Gregory De Prins’ 1959 Rejo finished fourth, pre-1961 sports cars.
