Vanden Plas Princess 4-Litre

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Driven -

Production of the 4-Litre ceased in 1968 but the Vanden Plas always seemed redolent of the Atlee era rather than the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It served as a ‘workaday’ limousine, one often seen attending the opening of police headquarters, town halls and other municipal events. Its robust power plant was very well suited to parade duties and on 20 March 1974 the 4-Litre carrying Princess Anne and Captain Mark achieved international notoriety. The VDP was travelling down Pall Mall when it was blocked by a Ford Escort driven by one Ian Ball. HRH’s reported response to the would-be kidnapper’s plans was ‘not bloody likely’.
