Renault Dauphine

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - Driven -

During HM’s visit to France in 1957, she toured Renault’s factory at Billancourt and Flins – and was subsequently given a new Dauphine. This was an incredibly astute publicity move on the part of La Regie, not least because they marketed their latest small car as the ‘Queen of the Road’. Out of all of the cars in this feature, the least is known about the Renault Dauphine and whether indeed HM benefitted from fuel costs of ‘a penny-farthing a mile’; one story is that it was rolled by a member of the Royal Household staff in 1961.
