John Griffiths, co-driver of the Mini Cooper S that won the 1964 International Welsh Rally, has died. He passed away on 5 May, aged 77.

Born in Bosbury, Herefordshire, John was a keen rally driver before becoming a co-driver. It was his pairing with Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams that led to the Mini Cooper S’ first outright rally win.

Barrie says: ‘He was a real Herefordshire farmer, and a brilliant driver too – that’s what made him such a good co-driver. I had complete trust in him, throughout the fog, ice and wind. If he said turn left and I couldn’t even see the corner through the fog, I’d turn left. I couldn’t have won the Welsh Rally without him.’
