The Porsche 914 – or Volkswagen-Porsche 914 if you want to be pedantic about it – is one of the more affordable ways into Porsche ownership. And, dare we say it, it’s also one of the more interesting machines to emerge from either marque, at a time when both of them were going through somewhat troubled phases.
Richard Gooding, a true Volkswagen fan, has done a great job of delving deeply into the history of these intriguing cars, revealing a fascinating development and production tale. It’s all very comprehensive and, while well-illustrated with period and modern photography, it doesn’t let the design compromise the in-depth anoraky detail. With sections on specifications, motorsport, buying and owning, we’d go so far as to call this pretty definitive.
