I might be get­ting ahead of my­self, but come year end and any­one asks me what my favourite sold-at-auc­tion car was in 2016, I al­ready know the an­swer. Step for­ward the Austin 16/6 coal truck that was sold at Brightwells (see be­low), al­most dou­bling its up­per es­ti­mate. Plenty of peo­ple keep telling me there’s no in­ter­est in pre-war cars: Re­ally? Judg­ing by those of all ages look­ing at ‘Blod­wyn’, and you might have to think again. Along with its fab­u­lously worn con­di­tion there was the great story of its time lug­ging sacks of coal around the Presteigne area, be­fore be­ing stored in a barn for 20 years. It’s now vy­ing for top place in the cars I’ve seen sold at auc­tion in the al­most six years I’ve been writ­ing this col­umn, the other be­ing the 1928 Mercedes-Benz S-Type sold at Bon­hams’ 2012 Good­wood
